Because many of the farms or fincas are economically unviable for farming (too small!) a lot of them are deserted. Foreigners buy them for vacation homes which sometimes causes some unrest with the local population. There is groundswell movement to attract young people to farm the land again. On the other hand, Mallorcans have become wealthy selling land and properties to these same foreigners. Mallorca is often called the Switzerland of Spain.
